General Questions
What is your story?
In 1961, a young Cary Nalls started selling veggies from a little wagon on a dirt road. As word spread, that wagon grew into a store, and Cary started adding plants and produce from his network of local growers.
Today, Nalls continues to expand, but it remains family owned & operated by 3 generations of Nalls. Come visit us and you’ll still see Cary out working in the yard, his daughter Valerie (winner of the 2015 Garden Center Young Retailer of the Year award) helping people find plants, and his grandchildren chasing the chickens.
Whether you swing by to find the perfect peach, play in the pumpkin patch in the fall, find some new things for your garden, or just to visit with the chickens and Penny the pig, we want to welcome you too to the Nalls family.

Produce Questions
Where does your produce come from?
We work with several local farms and orchards to bring you the freshest fruits and veggies possible. We strive to only carry the best produce and buy produce locally as much as possible. We also carry heirloom produce from local local farms, and supplement our offerings with more conventionally grown produce staples like bananas and avocados.
Is your produce organic or locally grown?
Our produce isn’t certified organic, but much of it is either minimally sprayed or grown without chemicals. We do our best to stock local produce year-round, though what’s available changes with the seasons.
In the summer, you’ll find the shop full of locally grown favorites like strawberries, peaches, corn, and watermelons. In the winter, we carry local leafy greens and hearty cold-weather veggies. To keep things fresh and varied, we also bring in produce from non-local farms when needed.
What is in season right now?
Summer: strawberries, peaches, nectarines, melons, grapes, figs, tomatoes, summer squash, bell peppers, hot peppers, okra, herbs, blackberries, raspberries, corn.
Fall: apples, hard squash, pumpkins, plums, quince, corn, green beans, potatoes, broccoli, arugula.
Winter: kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, spinach, mustard greens, cabbage, beets, turnips, hard squash, Florida citrus, pears.
Spring: asparagus, peas, strawberries, rhubarb, radishes, carrots, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, apricots, and blueberries.
Do you sell other local products (jams, honey, baked goods, etc.)?
Yes! We carry a big selection of locally made jams, coffee, bread, pastries, local honey, BBQ and dipping sauces, tea, chips, cheeses, eggs, and more.
Do you offer Crop Share or CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes?
Yes! We have a well-loved Crop Share (CSA) subscription program. This program is designed to help inspire you to try new produce and recipes, which we provide every week. We also offer you the ability to add milk, eggs, and locally baked bread to your subscription! To learn more, click here.
Do you host events?
We do not host private events, but we do host community events! These include our annual watermelon festival, apple butter event, pickle palooza, and ice cream social. We also have special weekends such as our Sourdough Weekend, Whoopie Pie Weekend, Cinnamon Roll Weekend, Stuff-a-Wagon, and more. Additionally, we have Pumpkin Hill open all October, which includes tunnels, hay pits, and other fun, kid-friendly activities.
Garden Center Questions
What types of plants do you sell?
We sell a variety of high-quality annuals, perennials, houseplants, shrubs, and trees.
Most of the greenhouses we work with are local, and we strive to find plants that are naturally well-suited to our climate. We carry both native and non-native plants. If looking for something specific, we would be happy to try and help you.
Do you carry native plants?
Yes, we carry native plants! We do our best to label all native plants with a “native” tag. If you are looking for something specific, please call or email us, and we would be happy to see what we have in stock.
Do you offer planting or landscaping services?
Unfortunately, we do not offer planting or landscaping services, but we are happy to recommend people!
Can you help diagnose plant problems or pests?
Yes! Send us a picture of your plant or garden to our email, info@nallsproduce.com, and we would be happy to help. Or you can come in person with pictures, and someone on staff may be able to help.
What is your return policy on plants and gardening products?
If a plant does not fit your space, please bring it back within 48 hours. If it ever looks sick, send us a pic, we can try and save it! Otherwise our warranty is 6 months, 50% store credit.
Most plants that die in the first year are dehydrated, so water regularly.
Do you carry indoor plants or houseplants?
Yes, we keep houseplants in stock all year! You can find our selection of houseplants in the garage building (where the ticket station is located) or the shop. If you are looking for something specific, give us a call at (703) 971-4068, and we can let you know if we have it in stock.
Do you offer bulk or wholesale pricing for landscapers or groups?
Yes! In the fall, we offer bulk prices for cornstalks, straw bales, pumpkins, and apples. To make an order, please visit the shop, send us an email, or give us a call. If you are interested in bulk or wholesale prices for additional products, please email us at info@nallsproduce.com or call us at (703) 971-4068.
Are pets allowed in the garden center?
We love animals, but only service animals are allowed. Thank you for understanding!
When is the best time to mulch, and how much do I need?
The two best times to mulch are in the Spring (March-May) and in the Fall (October-November). Our most popular mulch is Shredded Hardwood, and we suggest 1–2 inches of mulch for most beds. If you are reapplying annually, you can just top off the old mulch as long as it is not matted or decomposed. For more details, download our soil and mulch menu or click here.
What does full sun vs. part sun or part shade mean?
Full Sun: More than 6 hours of direct sunlight
Part Sun: 4–6 hours of direct sunlight. These plants need some heat and intense sun exposure in order to produce flowers and new growth.
Part Shade: 4–6 hours of direct sunlight. Part shade can mean mostly morning sun and some afternoon sun. These plants need protection from intense mid-day sun.
Full Shade: Less than 4 hours of direct sunlight. Full shade-loving plants enjoy a few hours of sun each day, preferably in the morning.
What plants do well in the shade?
Several plants, shrubs, and trees thrive in shaded areas in Virginia. These include ferns, hostas, wild ginger, astilbe, coral bells, lungwort, sedge, white wood aster, ragwort, Jacob’s ladder, Solomon’s seal, blue wood aster, spiderwort, Eastern red bud, and wild blue phlox.
