Greening your Garden

Nalls hand-selects the highest quality annuals, perennials, houseplants, shrubs, and trees to fill out our garden center. Most of the greenhouses we work with are local, and we strive to find plants that are naturally well suited to our climate. We want to help you make the most of your garden and your time – so your life can be filled with flowers and not chores.

The garden center changes inventory frequently, especially between seasons. We never carry a plant that you can’t comfortably grow right now – you will not find a tomato plant at Nalls in the winter, or tulip bulbs in the summer. We also tend to carry flowers during their blooming period – so you are unlikely to find creeping phlox at Nalls in the Fall, but you might find garden phlox – which blooms in the Fall.

Fall is not too late to start your garden! Plenty of flowers bloom in the cooler weather, and you can plant perennials, shrubs, and trees as long as the ground is workable. Mums & asters are the classic Fall plant – inexpensive flowers that fill your garden with tons of jewel-toned, compact, daisy-like blooms. They are a tender perennial in our region, so get them in the ground ASAP to get their roots established before the first frost. Other classic Fall perennials include coneflowers, sedum, coreopsis, and black-eyed susans. If you’re looking for less of a commitment – pansies, ornamental peppers, and celosia are perfect annuals to plant now. While tomato and squash season may be winding down, you can keep your veggie garden going with cool weather crops like broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, kale, and perennial herbs.

Support

The biggest advantage of independent garden centers compared to the big box stores? Personalized help and deep plant knowledge! Please feel free to contact us at any time to ask for plant advice (info@nallsproduce.com), or come in to the garden center and ask one of our experts. We are also available on Facebook and Instagram. And join our Facebook group for Budding Gardeners to get advice from our entire community of plant experts.

Pesticides & Fertilizers

Nalls is committed to minimal and safe pesticide use. We keep bees on the property to produce our local honey and help naturally encourage more blooms. For their protection, we only sell safer pesticide products that discourage bugs rather than killing them. We also carry organic fertilizer products from Espoma Organic, so you can be sure that what you feed your plants is also safe for you. Our perennial and annual plants are also grown neonic-free.

Mulch and Soil

All year round, Nalls carries an array of bagged mulch, soil, and stone to freshen up your garden and keep your plants growing strong. All of our mulch (except dyed varieties) is 100% BARK. Bark is more resistant to termites than whole shredded trees, and it is a natural byproduct of the lumber industry, making it more environmentally friendly. Click “learn more” to see our entire line of products, and learn which mulch is best for you.

Delivery

Nalls provides plant delivery services for the flat fee of $50 in our immediate geographic area.  Looking for more detailed landscaping services?  Contact our sister business, Nalls Landscaping.

General Plant Care & Watering Instructions

To properly water a tree or shrub, place a hose on trickle at the base of the plant.  Follow the chart below for a suggested length. Water more frequently in the spring and summer.  Plants in direct sun and plants that have been installed in the last six months should be watered more often.

For a potted plant, use good quality potting soil and leave a few inches at the top of the pot to hold water.  The pot also needs to have good drainage, so it is best to have an inch to three inches of rocks in the bottom of the pot.  Water daily, and in the summer heat, an additional watering may be required. Always water thoroughly, until water flows from the drainage holes in the bottom.

Deer Resistant Plants

Generally deer do not like plants that are poisonous, fuzzy, smelly, or have sharp foliage or thorns.  Unfortunately, deer are very fickle, and you may experience different results.
